Abstract

Understanding the nature of reality is fundamental to under standing the function of culture and its impact on those who internalize it. Without this understanding, true teaching becomes impossible; one is only able to indoctrinate with unexamined ideas, hindering the development of conscious thought and action. The difficulty of achieving this in schools stems from the fact that teachers generally lack research experience and thus lack a complete grasp of the most advanced cultural knowledge available, even within their specialized fields. Even in these areas, their training often consists of repeating second-hand information. Only an organizational structure providing regular research sabbaticals would effectively address this problem.
